Afghanistan to Japan: Do You Need a Plug Adapter? Adapter Needed
Yes. Plugs from Afghanistan (Type C and Type F) don't fit the sockets in Japan (Type A and Type B), so you need a travel adapter.
- Type C (two round pins (the "Europlug")): doesn't fit sockets in Japan. You need an adapter.
- Type F (two round pins with grounding clips on the sides ("Schuko")): doesn't fit sockets in Japan. You need an adapter.
Voltage
Japan uses 100V, roughly half the 220V in Afghanistan. Chargers rated "100-240V" work fine, but single-voltage 220V appliances will run weakly or not at all without a step-up converter.
What to pack
Look for an adapter that accepts Type C and Type F plugs and fits Type A and Type B sockets. An adapter only changes the plug shape, not the voltage.
Good to know about Japan
Most Japanese sockets are two-pin Type A without a grounding hole, so three-pin Type B plugs often will not fit, and some polarized plugs (one blade wider than the other) can be a tight fit. Eastern Japan, including Tokyo, runs at 50Hz; western Japan, including Osaka and Kyoto, runs at 60Hz.
